Taking St.Augustine’s City of God as textual sample, this paper discusses the ideaistic relationship between Western historical theology and historical metaphysics, suggesting that the idea of universal history and the perspective of teleology contained in the former paves the way for the discourse about historical meaning in speculative philosophy of history. However, due to the lack of logical stand beyond history, such as God’s eye,the meaning of history as whole can not be established.Nevertheless, the speculative prefigure about it still makes some sense in the knowledge of history and in the historical practice of human being on a level of Kantian norm. Finally, the key point is that we should not construe this basically regulative norm as real existing transcendental being, such as Providence or Absolute Sprit.
