Symbolism is a literary device which is adopted to portray another object or individual. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne often used a tangible object to represent an undefined idea, complex in scope and significance. This paper studies the symbol meanings of some important col?ors- red or scarlet, gray and green which are described in the novel to make the readers get a deeper and clearer understanding of the use of symbolism.
